OMG OMG OMG…..I have never been so excited about seeing a competition in my life!!
Other than the Cherry Ripe Mudcake recipe (which even tastes great as Gluten Free), I would have to say the list of suppliers, its so hard to know where to start with supplies when you first start out.
Something else I would like to see are other decorating courses advertising their services, because that is information that is hard to find via google as well (well it is in the Northern Melbourne Suburbs!)
Which Planet Cake course would I love to do…all of them!! Ideally I would love to take the week off work and do the foundation course, but Starting with Basics 101 & 102 would fill the gap till I can find the money to do the full course.
I really enjoyed the paste gun article and which are best, I found the article to be very informative.
My favourite tutorial was on how to make edible pearls as I use these buggers quite a lot.
I love trying new recipes, so the more the better! And the tutorials are always great. Maybe a bit more on 3D cakes- carving them etc.
I have been saving towards doing the foundation course over the last year and this $500 prize would be great and means i could do the course so much sooner!
Anyway, good luck to all(and myself) who enter! What a fantastic prize!
What an awesome competition!!
The most useful thing I have got from your blog is the tutorial on how to make your own pearls, I used it to make pearls for my sisters wedding cake last weekend
You have some great articles, so it’s hard to aywhat else, but I LOVE tutorials, so maybe more of them.
And the class, well I haven’t attende one yet, but in Nov, I am doing all of the Brisi ones, then I have booked into one in March- but I would ABSOLUTLEY love to do the new Intermediate intensive 5 day course in June/July 2010… what a help $500 would be to get me to that one!
Thanks so much for the great blog, and the fantastic competition!!!!
I agree, the chance to win this is all too exciting!
One of the things I find the most helpful is the step by step instructions that are posted, usually with some rather amazing photos.
I guess I would like to see info on Melbourne based clubs, meetings etc. (I realise you are Syndey based so thats prob difficult). Sometimes it is hard to know where to start, especially if cake decorating is a hobby rather than a business.
I would love to do the basics 101 & 102 because although I have done some cakes for my kids, it would be a great opportunity to start at the beginning and be able to get it right instead of bluffing my way through them.
This site pretty much has everything a cake decorator needs.
I like the list of suppliers and also the tutorials.
I would love to see more tutorials, i’m always looking for new ideas.
I would be happy to do any courses Planet cake has to offer especially the madhatter course.
OMG…how exciting and how generous of planet cake. This has to be the comp of the year. For me the most useful item on the blog has been the comp dates and dates for associacian seminars and the links to those sites. I am generally busy and disorganised and without those this year I would have been very stressed. What would I like to see on the blog. I am going all out here. “Tips from the top cakers” I mean the celebritys of the cake world. It was so lovely when Lindy Smith dropped in and commented on the mag, It would be exciting to have the occasional column featuring both local and international cake artists whether that information is just about what inspires them or even leaving a tip or two for us enthusiastic cake decorators. Whoo hoo I am excited for who ever wins this comp!!
OMG OMG I forgot to say what class I dream of doing….the madhatter of course!!!!
Oh, Nicole! Such amazing news! How do you manage to get it? Very exciting!
For me the most useful piece of information you have on your blog is the list of suppliers and also dates of various meetings of cake decorators. And generally I just like the fact you are trying to keep all of us, crazy about cakes, together, with your blog, with the forum, and on flickr.
Something I would like to see on your blog is a handy way to find the information I know I have seen before but don’t know now where to look at it. Some tutorials or recipes, this sort of things. Perhaps you have it but I could not find and generally just go through all old posts.
Which class am I interested in doing? Better ask me which class I am not interested! : -) But honestly there are so expensive that I can only go on their web-site checking the list of classes and hoping that maybe, maybe one day …. However I guess that 2T Suitcase class is my favorite. I have done a suitcase cake before but would love to find out how it is done by professionals.
I’m dreaming of a date with Planet Cake,
Then I visit the blog and it’s not fake,
I have a chance, a chance to win my dream,
I’ll say how much I love the buttercream;
It’s fluffy texture and delicious taste,
I do not care if it goes to my waist;
Without this recipe, what would I make,
It really is the icing on my cake;
As I browse the blog I would love to see,
A page that I have designed just for me;
Personalised home page, can be it’s name,
When I sign in it doesn’t look the same,
I can save my favourites, maybe a link
It’ll all be there, I won’t have to think
Now, what would I like to do on this date,
Mad Hatter- the course after 1 0 8;
“Unique and Enthralling” it is the best,
Perfecting this shape- it will be my quest;
It is the class that I would love to do,
Provided that this is my dream come true
I would love to win this competition.I am a big fan of Planet cake.
the most useful information on this blog has been the different Events/Cake Decorators Guilds, I have contacted the Golden west branch (talked to a very nice lady) and I am due to go to the next meeting as a guess on the 14 of November, I cannot wait.
What I would like to see on the blog is positions advertised for cake decorators as work experience or as a casual/full time work.
My next step is to do a Madhatter course with Planet Cake.
So excited about this comp. The things I like about the blog are the recipes and tutorials and especially the suppliers links. I would like to see more projects and how tos by famous cake artists similar to the ones in the uk magazine cake craft and decoration. The course I would like to go on is the basics 102 square cake with figurine course. fingers crossed!
oooo, how exciting…
um, i love all the things on here. The suppliers are fantastic. The tutorials are great. oo, and the recipes are awesome. Was delighted to find that cherry ripe mud cake recipe that i had seen everyone making.
I am with alot of others on this, i think more tutorials would be great. Its always good to see how to do those things that we often sit there wondering about how on earth they are done… and even how simple the tutorials make them seem and leave us wondering how we didnt think of it before. haha.
I have been doing cake decorating for a couple yrs now and have never been able to afford to do a course, so i am self taught. i would love to start out with any of the beginner courses so that i can pick up all the little tips and tricks to make my cakes fantastic and see where i have been going wrong all this time!!
Good luck everyone!!
Awesome! I’d LOVE to win this comp! There are 2 things I’ve found most useful on this site – the article on choosing a clay gun (it definitely helped me to make up my mind!) but perhaps what I’ve used more is the tutorial on making your own baking strips. I make these now for every cake I bake!
I would like to see more recipes, in particular different flavoured cakes!
If I had to pick ONE Planet Cake course, I’d probably pick Basics 102! Thanks for a great blog!
I would so love to go back for another course at PC.
I agree with others that the article on the clay gun was fantastic. Because of this I bought the green one and it works like a dream. I also like the tutorial about creating tall boxes.
I would also love to see ‘interviews’ with cake decorating celebrities!
I would love to do the extended tiers course if they let me, otherwise the basics 104.
I would absolutely love to win this class. I’m visiting melbourne in March and I’d really love to learn lots more about planet cake and the australian cake decorating methods.
I’m particularly interested in the ganache covering that you use over there.
I’ll definitely be investing in some of the Planet Cake books on my visit, so hopefulyl I’ll find them ok….
Hi Aunty Nicole!
Can I enter?
Can I enter?
Can I … please!
I’ll say ALL good things about you
I need help to make those Birthday Cakes for you!
I love the decorating style and the recipes. Any new trend in cake making or decorating or new tools that become available are always good info. As for the classes at Planet Cake, it will be a tough choice. Thank you for the wonderful blog
Wow,
I visited you immediately after being made aware of the competition on the BSGuild in the UK. When I saw there was a competition to win a course, I registered instantly, I LOVE Planet Cake. I would love to do the Mad Hatter Course.
I need to go to Australia as my step father has recently passed away. I am going mid December to spend quality time with my mother and basically to help her sort things out. It is going to be tough as he has been with us for 35 years and was really what I call my father. wouldn’t it be wonderful to win, as I stop en route.
I Would love to see the suppliers divided up in Australia by States instead of sifting through all of them to find ones in Adelaide. I hope to at least spend some time looking at what is on the market their. Well must get going and good luck to everyone.
What a fantastic comp! Like everyone else I would love to win a PC course (who wouldn’t!!). What I like best about the site is the diversity of information provided, from the great tutorials, info on dates and seminars to the recipes (everyone loves the cherry ripe mud cake!!!) The thing that has helped me the most is the tutorial on making your own baking strips.
I would also love to see more tutorials and updates on new products or techniques.
Any course would be amazing but a 3D or Madhatter would be my pick.
OK, you know how much I want this one!!! So does everyone though, so..
what have I gained from the most??? Definately the ganache information in the past, and more recently, the clay gun info. You are like a one woman trialling machine! Everything that needs to be reviewed is taken care of courtesy of Nicole! I have forwarded the link to the ganache to so many friends I have lost count.
What do I want to see more of? I think contributions from members (including myself) with simple tutorials for simple model making. Maybe even cupcake toppers.
And lastly, what class would I like to do?? well the madhatter is screaming to me…but I think starting with springtime would be a very Handi (lol) place to start!!
thanx for the opportunity!
Wow, I would love to win a Planet Cake class. I would love to try the beginners class just to get the basics.
The information I have found most usefult has been the guide to fondant and a guide to ganache. I am always refering back to these posts!
Thanks
Wow! How amazing, l’m rather new to cake decorating but ever since l have started it is all l think about (besides my family that is) I have just become a member of your blog but have been following frequently.
I love the tutorials on your blog l have learnt so much from them, l have gained so much from them.
I know it might sound silly but l would love to see more of them.
If l was to win the voucher l would put it towards to Basics 104.
Thank you soooo much for this opportunity!
I found this blog in a google search about six months ago and I now use your piping gel recipe and cherry ripe mud cake recipe RELIGIOUSLY. And as many have stated, your list of suppliers is also a winner.
What I’d love to see, if at all possible, is a list of cake decorating competitions in each state. I’m dying to enter one and am finding it so difficult to find any information. Maybe it’s a QLD thing? Haha.
I’m a massive planet cake fan, I have their book and would jump up and down if they brought out another. I’d obviously, love to do ALL their courses. But after contacting them recently I was advised that Basics 102 would be a good place to start for me! So that’s what I’d be interested in…
Thanks a bunch. If I win, I’ll die.. haha.
This is such an exciting contest. Planet Cake classes have been a dream of mine since first finding Nicoles forum and then later the blog. You Aussie’s are such great sugar artists. I think the one feature I have enjoyed on the blog has been the step by step tutorials. No matter how long you have been doing cakes there is always something new to learn.
Learning how to use ganache under a fondant cake was amazing to me, so much smoother and more stable than buttercream. What more would I like to see on the blog? Maybe guest decorators from other countries with an article on their particular specialty. Which class would I be most interested in? I think the whimsy or wonky cakes they do at Planet Cake, but really any class would be wonderful. I am saving up my pennies now and imagining what all I would see in Australia. I suppose most people would want to go to Paris or London if given a choice of vacations, but I have always wanted to see Australia. I can just imagine trying to get all the cake goodies onto the plane that I have acquired while there.
Well…. I didn’t want to be FIRST to enter but… rather be fashionably late than get caught out and miss out! LOL
What do I like about the Blog… like Sharon I love that you have taken the time to help us girls remember what is on and where with the Dates of the Guild & Association meetings and other important events coming up. I agree that the Guilds/Associations etc are way behind the times when it comes to getting their information out into cyberspace – hardly anything comes up when you Google. I find the Blog is sort of like my 1 stop resource center – when we were researching all of this info, I book-marked and saved info etc. but your Blog format is so easy to retrieve things. I refer to it a lot.
A little surprised at the more tutorials comments … wondering if people have hit the LINKS button? I lost count after 100 J
What would I like to see?
Wow – that’s a tough call ! Leave you to do what you do best
As for what course… any really (I just love being there!) but I’d like to try my hand at one of the more complex 3D courses – car ?
Wow….I have been looking at their courses lately wondering when I will be able to do one..
Ok
The most useful thing for me on this blog has been having access to all the recipes. I am forever losing recipes that I print out and knowing they are only a click away is a comfort to me.
What I would find most useful is more information about cake charges to customers.
I would be interested in a beginners class as I have never actually had any training.
Good luck to everyone!
Wow!! somebody pinch me I think I’ve died & gone to heaven.
I nearly peed my pants with exitement when i saw this competition !! LOL !
I would have to say that as a rank ameture & begginer, the suppliers Australia/international have been a huge help to me.
Its hard to improve on perfection but what I think would be good, that is if it doesn’t already exist but I just haven’t found it yet, is a link where product reveiws can be carried out & or a list of products & the best place to buy them from at the best peices.
As for the cake courses, I’ve had absolutely no clases so far so anything would be out of this world.
Would probably like the mad hatter or the shoe box course.
Keep up the great work, this Blog is amazingly helpful. Love it
I am so excited to have just discovered the ‘Cakes and More Blog’. I have taken in SO much on my very first login, I look forward to being able to contribute as well.
I loved the tutorial given on ganache, especially as it is my NEMESIS!!
I am all for as many tutorials as possible to be placed on the Cakes and More Blog. There are cake decorators out there working at all different levels and with many diverse decorating interests, but all looking to learn so much more….so absolutely more Tutorials I say!
The thought of winning the Planet Cake Competition and attending the Beginners 101 class is really beyond my wildest dream! I would at last be able to ganache a cake successfully and not have nightmares about it!
I love decorating cakes for my friends and family and I have a great love of sharing my passion with my daughter and my little 3yo granddaughter who already adores baking.
I am sure that should I win and attend the Beginners 101 Planet Cake Course, my only problem would be that there might be no stopping me……….beg, borrow or steel (well maybe not steel LOL) I would just want to make my way up the courses to get to the Basics 109 Two Tier Madhatter Cake Course!!! Ooops…I would have to enter and win lots more Planet Cake Competitions…..bring on more competitions too I also say!!!
Good luck everyone!
OMG! This is the stuff that dreams are made of. To attend a class with the gurus of cake decorating in Australia would be life changing for me.
The most useful piece of information for me is the list of Australian Suppliers. I was first directed to this site when I asked a question on the PC forum about suppliers. That was my lucky day – hope there’s another one around the corner.
I would like to see more tutorials on the Cakes and More Blog. I have basically taught myself cake decorating by watching tutorials on you tube and the like and am always keen to learn more.
I would love to do the shoebox course if I was lucky enough to win.
Cheers
Deb.
This would be a dream come true if I were to win the PC voucher!! I have been wanting to start my own business for a while in the field of creative/ artistic design in various mediums (I have been an artist for a number of years now working with acrylic and oils on canvas) and will be signing up for a couple of PC courses in the new year to branch out my artist flare into an edible format. To get some additional support through a gift voucher would be a fant-abulous way to help me get addicted to this skill
I started thinking about getting into the industry when I made my own engagement and wedding cakes and I must say the most useful piece of info for me on Cakes & more blog has been both the lustre pearls and various ganache recipes – absolute saviours given all the other resources on the net didn’t even compare to the info on here! The list of suppliers has also been fantastic and has given me an added ‘edge’ to my culinary creations that Coles and Safeway simply can’t compete with!
What I would like to see on the Cakes and More blog is a photo gallery for people’s creations as well as a couple more tutorials on the more advanced cakes like wraps and very tall cakes. I have another wedding cake to conquer and the bride wants it to defy gravity with at least 6 tiers … I need to know how to not make gravity defy me and get this chocolate skyscraper to stay vertical!
I am interested in a heap of PC courses, but will go with the BASICS Foundation 5 day intensive, followed by some other PC courses later in the year to compliment the skills I will learn between the course and then.
Cheers
Brooke
Ahh just hearing the Planet Cake name sends excitement up and down my spine!
I am starting out in the cake decorating field (unofficially for six years, seriously for almost one!) and find this blog particularly helpful in so many areas. I especially love the articles and tutorials as I am learning and such information shared from the experts only makes my learning easier!
I would love to see more tutorials on tools and what you can achieve with them and perhaps modelling different figures/animals etc.
I am about to do both the Basics and Novelty 101 & 102 in Brisbane so would love to follow that up with a 103 in Novelty or Basic!
Thanks for the opportunity!
I think the blog is already jam packed with goodies you are doing a great job Nicole and I am not just saying that because I want to win
I use the supplier list regularly and I love the tutorials.
The only thing I can think of to add would maybe somewhere people could list good buys, bargains etc eg. “company Z has pure icing sugar on special this week” etc. The suppliers on your list could be invited to list their specials too.
I would love to do the madhatter course.
Love the thought of winning a PC voucher so am posting to let you know I love your site. In particular the links to the books available and also reading and meeting members with heaps of answers and questions re cake decorating. Would love to see more of the examples of tool work and a “trend” type section on what people are being asked to do for clients and family etc so I can keep up with new ideas and be current. If I win the prize I would love to do one of the novelty cake classes or the funky people classes. Thanks and keep up the great site I am loving it!
Some of my favourite recipes are here… like Fran’s modelling paste!
I love to do a flower class at PC
Keep up the great work :O)
Firstly, I just want to say a big Thank You for giving us the opportunity to win this great prize!
The cakes and more blog is a great place to find pretty much any info required related to Cakes. There isnt one thing in particular that stands out – all catgories are thorough and informative. I do, however, look to your list of suppliers whenever I need to purchase something. Living in regional Vic, its not easy to always get into the city so finding reliable sites to purchase from is great!
It would be great to see more tutorials. The level of detail you go to is fantastic – its very easy to follow.
Ive only been decorating or a year or so andhave picked things up from blogs, tutorials and asking the pro’s so I think i would like to get back to basics and learn the “right” way to do things – from torting to decorating (you can never be too informed!). In saying this, id love to attend the Basics 101 class and work my way through the classes.
Hi. I would die if I won this comp … we can’t afford for me to take the classes currently but I sooooo want to!
1) The most useful information is of course your tutorials – even if you think you know how to do something …sometimes someone has a different or better way of doing things.
2) Something I would find helpful is probably more targeted info on how to start selling your cakes and growing a customer base.
3)The class I’m interested in is the Basics Foundation – I want to start from scratch … get best practice skills under my belt and learn new things! I want to immerse myself into cake decorating!
i found the homemaade baking strips useful and i’m going to try your cherry ripe mud cake. sounds yum! actually so does the peppermint crisp version too!
I’d love to see more ideas on how to make your own tools and equipment.
I am interested in all the classes!
I would love the opportunity to attend a course at Planet Cake.
Having started my cake decorating hobby in July this year, I found this blog very useful as a learning tool and has made me very motivated to achieve things I would not have dreamed I could do earlier this year. I have found all areas of the blog useful but the most useful and informative was the learning section, finding out where I could learn more.
I love reading the book reviews and would love to see more of that and also it would be good for beginners to get a run down on all the essential equipment for starting out.
I would love to go to the 101 or 102 class.
wow, what an amazing prize – I would love to go to PC for a class.
I find the articles, particularly tool series and home made baking strips the most interesting, though probably “useful” means most often referred to – in that case, the supplier listing I keep coming back to again and again.
I’m torn between the novelty and the basics series of classes – I would love to do the basics to improve my techniques, but kids novelty cakes are amazing and include some modelling which I would love to do too
thanks for the opportunity to enter
What an AMAZING Giveaway! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to do the Cup Cake Boot Camp at Planet Cake!!! (this would have to be the best type of boot camp I could think of
I have only just found this site, but your list of suppliers is fantastic its so great to find new recommendations (and try out new recipes too)
Thanks so much, fingers toes and everything else crossed!!
Bel x
Hi!
I find very useful the list of suppliers and the tutorials.
I would like to see more tutorials and examples of finished items.
If I win, would like to do one of the basic courses or the bride & groom modeling.
Great prize!!!
Wow, what a great prize!!!!
The whole concept of cake decorating is very new to me. I have always loved baking but have recently tried to be more creative and enhance the appearance of my cakes.
As it seems I have been on steep learning curve I have had to use forums such as yours and Planet Cakes to learn basic techniques…….thank god for your piping bag tutorial but also develop my baking experiences like trying the citrus mudcake and cherry ripe mudcake recipes.
Its great to be able to find recipes that actually work well for cakes that are to be decorated.
I would have to say the best thing about the website is the tutorials and supplier details. I couldnt even try to count the number of hours I have wasted watching dodgy YouTube videos for help. Its great to know that people who have the right techniques are happy to share their knowledge. I hope that when I get better I will be able to help other new cake decorators.
One thing I cant find any info on is good instructions to make gumpaste shoes. I have bought every type of assistance known to the industry and I still cant get them right!
I started learning about cake decorating through Planet Cake and I am a huge fan of their courses. I have completed the Basics 101 and 102 classes. I would love to do the Basics 103 course. I need to make my way through all the Planet cake courses so that I am qualified enough to do their Stiletto shoe box speciality workshop.
Cake decorating has become my addiction……I can never get enough!!!!
I would absolutely love the opportunity to be a part of the Planet Cake Decorating classes!!!! I’ve been keeping updated with the planet cake website & Newsletter for some time but just haven’t had the time to book a course yet. I’ve been making wedding cakes for family and friends and would love to gain more knowledge on cake decorating, especially the ‘Mad Hatter’.
Planet Cake has been my inspiration in Cake decorating for years and to complete one of their courses would be fantastic!!! Their cakes are the best!!!
I find the FORUM most useful. With the forum I was able to search up some very helpful tips on cake decorating and that did make my life much easier :p
Thanks gals!
I would like to see more tutorials (could be either videos or even picture based tutorials). I think that is the most useful thing especially when you are just so tired of reading text. Ps: I really like how you posted the planet cake picture tutorial
Also if there was some post about a a new product or an interesting product would be great.
I am interested in doing Basic 107Wrap…. No wait, Basic 106springtime……………….. wait… actually I can’t decide! I want to do them all!
How exciting, I was only looking at Planet Cake courses a couple of weeks ago.
In general, the tutorials, learning and articles have been my best friends but I have to say the ganaching post was most helpful….i had so much trouble working out how ganache worked for what I wanted it for – now I know!
I’d like to see more information/reviews on books that can help people with starting their own cake business or some basic tips on where to start – sometimes we have the great cake service/product but we don’t always know where to go from there.
I’m sure most of us would like to do all the courses at Planet Cake – their book is at the front of my cake book rack. We all have to start somewhere though, so perhaps the Basics 101 course is the way to go.
How Awesome!!! What a fantastic opportunity. I love Cakes and More and have learnt so much from everything on your site. The tutorials, the articles the supplier lists etc I try to absorb like a sponge! LOL The chocolate cherry ripe cake recipe is a favourite but the best thing out is the decorator’s buttercream! I make it all the time from Nicole’s adapted recipe and have had success halving it and also doubling it and still getting the same great result!
A planet cake course would be an icing on my cake. I would make the time to get there and absorb everything. I think I would have to start with the first basic 101 course or the novelty 101 course.
This would be an awesome opportunity as I have not had the spare cash to be able to do this for myself. Thanks for the opportunity PC and Cakes and More!
I stumbled across this blog while i was in my 9-5 job, and i must say it is pretty good. (I definately added it to my favourites list)
I absolutely love making cakes and when I saw the opporunity to win a course with Planet Cake I had to try.
The tutorial section on the site is fantastic. It is always great to see how peoples method differ. I hope to see alot more of this.
Another thing i would find useful is a cutting guide and cake size guide.
Many websites vary with what size cakes they suggest to serve. So I think a reference guide would be great.
I would like to start with the Basic 101 course, and then continue on with the rest.
Thanks. I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed I’m the winner
OMG I have just found this blog and i must say that it is AWESOME!!!! I have been decorating cakes for a year or so and i have been at a loss as where to get quality ingrediants in Australia. This blog gave me so many tips for Australian suppliers! everything else i found was in the USA.
I would love the opportunity to do any of the Planet Cake Courses..When the book came out i was first inline to get it and i love it!
I have been wanting to do a Planet cake Course for ages, but to win one would be a dream!
Awesome awesome Blog thanks so much for all the great info and tips..
Bring on the tutorials….I’m like a sponge, just soaking it up at the moment. Just can’t get enough, can’t get enough, no!!!
More information from EVERYONE would be great. Every little story counts. We all have so much to learn from each other. Thats one amazing thing about PC, they are not shy too share their info.
I’ve been lucky enough to do a couple of PC courses already (they are fab, VERY addictive, & I recommend to all) but would give my eye teeth (and any other body parts if neccesary) to do the 3D car (novelty masters course) with Maggie.
How unreal would that be!!!!
I’m a little way off from that one, but hey, we all have to have goals. To win the voucher would make a small dent in the course ‘donation’ of knowledge.
What a fantastic blog!
I have always been interested in cake decorating and i found their book about a month ago.I am looking forward to doing a 5day planet cake course next year!
Your blog has been so helpful to find suppliers! I looked all over google to find them with little luck.
The tips for the decorating are great! Keep them coming for beginners like me.
Thanks again!
